Kalahari Waterpark Expanding
Making it America's Largest Indoor Waterpark
SANDUSKY, OH, February 15, 2007. As the indoor waterpark industry continues to surge, new construction is up 33 percent over 2005 according to consulting firm JLC Hospitality, Kalahari Resorts is taking the trend to new heights. The African-themed waterpark resort company which boasts the largest indoor waterpark in the nation (125,000 sq. ft.) at its Wisconsin Dells, WI property, today announced plans to build another showstopper at its resort in Sandusky, Ohio. Scheduled for completion in December, Kalahari's Sandusky property will measure 173,000 sq. ft., making it America's largest indoor waterpark.
To accomplish the undertaking, Kalahari, which opened its Sandusky property in May 2005, will more than double the size of its existing 80,000 sq. ft. waterpark and feature several innovative amenities including a special Texlon transparent roof. The "intelligent" roof system creates a comfortable ideal vacation environment, allowing natural light in, enabling real foliage to grow, and softening acoustic conditions.
With ordinary hotels adding less than 1 percent growth to the hotel industry room supply and 36 indoor waterpark hotels under construction, Kalahari maintains that going big is better. "We're not concerned about oversaturation in the indoor waterpark arena," says Todd Nelson, president and owner, Kalahari Resorts. "It takes a tremendous amount of commitment, ingenuity and funding to create an exciting waterpark and we believe consumers will continue to choose resorts that make their getaway experience a big deal."
Due to the popularity of indoor surfing, Kalahari's new waterpark will feature two FlowRider surfing rides. In addition, Kalahari's indoor waterpark will highlight a 12,000 sq. ft. wave pool, a Behemoth Bowl which rotates 2 to 4 people through its 60' diameter bowl, Octopus Racers where you can race down a 55' incline, a body slide Pro Bowl ride, indoor/outdoor spas with swim up bar, a 3,700 sq. ft. basketball pool, a 2,500 sq. ft. children's play area and more.
