Pueblos Launch "Into the Sunset Western Pueblo Tours"
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, April 10, 2007. Joint efforts between the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC) in Albuquerque and the neighboring Pueblos of Acoma and Zuni recently launched an unprecedented joint venture of Pueblo-owned and operated guided bus tours to provide a comprehensive Native American cultural experience for visitors.
"Into the Sunset Western Pueblo Tours" will feature day tours to the Pueblos of Acoma and Zuni each week. The tours start in Albuquerque at the IPCC, which is operated by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. The tours will offer transportation, Pueblo step-on guides, traditional Pueblo meals, guided walking tours through each site's museum, cultural centers, missions and village tours led by a member of the respective pueblo. The tours can accommodate 10-55 people.
"Destination Acoma" features the Sky City Cultural Center, Haak'u Museum and historic "Sky City," the most continuously occupied village in North America. This tour is offered every Tuesday and Thursday. "Experience Zuni" will begin in mid-April and offers two alternating tours on Wednesdays to Halona Idiwan'a (the Middle Village) and includes either the Old Zuni Mission or the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center. Zuni was first of the Pueblos to have encountered Spanish explorers in 1540 in their search for the mythical "Seven Cities of Gold."
Proceeds from these tours will support the cultural education programs of the Acoma and Zuni Pueblos and IPCC. "We all agree that this venture has been a long time coming. Not only does this partnership benefit the tribes and IPCC financially, this effort ensures that the historical and cultural information shared with tour guests is coming directly from the Pueblos themselves," said Tazbah McCullah, Marketing Director for the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.
"These new tours are an exciting addition to the tourism offerings in the Albuquerque area. Albuquerque is considered to be the perfect hub for a Native American cultural experience and we are thrilled to partner with several entities to market the new Into the Sunset Western Pueblo Tours so visitors can experience the rich heritage of this area," said Dale Lockett, President/CEO of the Albuquerque Convention & Visitors Bureau.
