The Key to Sustainable Business Success: Be a People Leader
By Eugenio Pirri Chief People & Culture Officer, The Dorchester Collection | February 26, 2017
People are the lifeblood of our sector. Without great people, who are realizing their full potential daily, we, as a hospitality industry, are unable to provide memories, adventures or experiences. Our people are the lynchpin to our success or failure of a business. They are the difference between a four and five star. They are the reason for loyal customers who return time and time again. And they are the reason we, as businesses, have the ability to grow, profit and prosper.
Though employees can only be truly great if they are given the opportunity to be so. Their skills and talents need to be spotted, nurtured, developed, supported and given the chance to thrive. To ensure this, hotels not only need willing and enthusiastic individuals; they need fantastic people leaders.
A Leadership Crisis
Unfortunately, though, the world is in somewhat of a leadership crisis. In the June edition of Ambition, the magazine from the Association of MBAs, Editor in Chief, David Woods, referred to the leadership deficit as an 'endemic worldwide' with high profile leadership seemingly falling from grace. At a grass roots business level, 86% of organizations believe we have a global leadership crisis (World Economic Forum, 2015). And Careerbuilder, the job search engine, in their 2014 leadership study found only 1/3rd of people aspire to be leaders. A figure which worryingly drops to just 7% for C-Suite level roles.
The same study also found that the longer people were in a role, the less likely they were to aspire to be a manager. And so, the stark realization from these figures reveal that leadership, as it stands, is no longer appealing to the workforce of the future. The times of hierarchy, parent / child and command and control are far behind us. If we wish to attract future leaders into the hotel sector, then the role of leadership and the skills associated with it, must change.
