Julio Berdegue, Founder of El Cid Resorts, Dies

MAY 1, 2007. Julio Berdegu'e, founder of El Cid Resorts and president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Businesses, died on of heart failure, early Sat., April 21, 2007. He was 76 years old.

Born April 14, 1931 in Madrid, Spain, Mr. Berdegu'e came to Mexico with his family at the age of 9. He became a great leader for Mexican tourism and a visionary for the City of Mazatl'an as a destination.

Mr. Berdegu'e launched Mazatl'an's tourism industry with the opening of Hotel Granada in 1972. He followed with the opening of the luxurious El Cid Resorts. Today, El Cid boasts the city's largest resort collection. With more than 3,000 employees, El Cid Resorts includes: El Cid Marina Beach Hotel, El Cid Castilla Beach Hotel, El Cid El Moro Beach Hotel, El Cid Granada Country Club in Mazatl'an. Also part of the collection: the award-winning Hotel Marina El Cid Riviera Maya and El Cid La Ceiba Beach hotel in Cozumel.

"Julio Berdegu'e was a legendary businessman who made Mazatl'an one of Mexico's top destinations," says Carlos Berdegu'e, vice president of the Mazatl'an Hotel Association and Tourism Board and Julio Berdegu'e's son. "He was greatly admired in political circles as well as in the travel industry throughout Mexico. Through his hard work and passion for whatever he did, he was a role model who was loved dearly by his family and by the entire family of El Cid Resorts."

Among Julio Berdegu'e's many accomplishments, he was national president of the Association of Mexican Businesses. He also served as national president of the Commercial Board in Culiac'an.

Mr. Berdegu'e is survived by his wife, Dolores and their four sons, Julio, Fernando, Carlos and Mariano.
