WILMINGTON, DE, September 19, 2008. Add art to your life this fall, with September-October 2008 exhibitions and activities at the Delaware Art Museum.

NEW EXHIBITIONS:

Hispanic Lives, Latin Worlds-Simple Complexities (Vidas Hispanas, Mundos Latinos-Simplicidad y Complejidad), through October 12, 2008. This exhibition celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with over 30 works of art whose diverse styles and media explore the juxtapositions between young and old, new and traditional, rural and urban, simple and complex. Hispanic Lives, Latin Worlds is part of the Museum's Outlooks Exhibition Series, which features exhibitions created by regional organizations, individuals, and community groups that are then hosted by the Museum, furthering our mission to "offer an inclusive and essential community resource." Guest curator is Riccardo Stoeckicht, VP of Operations at the Rodel Fdn. of Delaware.

Hispanic Heritage Community Day (Sunday, September 28, 2008, noon-3:30 p.m.). Free. Celebrate Hispanic heritage, arts, and culture with a fun and educational afternoon at the Delaware Art Museum! Kids and their families will enjoy meeting artists featured in the new Outlooks exhibition, and will learn about the artists' techniques and the cultural roots that inspired them. In addition, there will be colored pencil demonstrations, a variety of traditional Latin American garments and costumes, and Hispanic-inspired art activities. All ages.

Bare Witness: Photographs by Gordon Parks (October 11, 2008-January 4, 2009). This retrospective exhibition features 73 works selected by Gordon Parks (1912-2006) as examples of his most potent imagery. After rising as a portrait and fashion photographer, Parks began documenting social ills as part of the Farm Security Administration. In 1948, he became the first African American staff photographer for Life magazine and established an international reputation for his photo essays chronicling the lives of the poor and the Civil Rights movement. He was also an author (The Learning Tree), filmmaker (Shaft), poet, and musician.

The Arts as Catalysts for Social Justice (Saturday, October 11, 10:30 a.m.-noon; coffee and exhibition viewing starting at 10:00 a.m.). Free with Museum admission. Participate and engage in a lively conversation and call to action concerning the arts as a catalyst for social change. Following opening remarks by Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker, speakers including Jane Golden (Director, Mural Arts Project) and Dr. Guthrie (Guy) P. Ramsey, Jr. (Musicologist, University of Pennsylvania) will address ways in which the arts can change lives and transform communities. Participants are invited to engage in break-out sessions that further discuss the next steps they see for themselves as artists, activists, and community members.

Gordon Parks Film Series, featuring films directed by Parks (second Sundays at 1:30 p.m. for duration of Bare Witness). Free. Sunday, October 12: The Learning Tree, 1969, 107 minutes. Serving as director, writer, producer, and composer, Parks adapted his own autobiographical novel for the big screen, becoming the first African American filmmaker to produce a major studio film. Selected as one of the first films for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, The Learning Tree explores the racial conflicts in early 20th-century America through the eyes of a teenage boy.

Unlocked Doors: The Art of Gordon Parks (Saturday, October 18, 2 p.m.). Free with Museum admission. Philip Brookman, Director of Curatorial Affairs at Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and a noted writer, filmmaker, and photographer, will discuss the works of Gordon Parks.

CONTINUING:

Gifted: Recent Additions to the Permanent Collection (through November 9, 2008). Features more than 30 works of art given to the Delaware Art Museum since its reopening in June 2005, including paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, and ceramics. Gifted gives visitors a glimpse into how the Museum's collection grows through the generosity of collectors.

Other Programs & Events

Art on the Town (Friday, October 3, 4-9 p.m.). Free. The Delaware Art Museum joins other cultural institutions in Wilmington to offer free admission and extended hours during the first Friday evening of the month. The Museum offers a cash bar.

Trick-or-Treat Family Day (Sunday, October 26, noon-3:30 p.m.). Free. Celebrate Halloween with spooky stories, fun face painting, and boo-tiful art! Kids and their families will enjoy listening to original Halloween tales told by Ms. Diane Delaney in Kids' Corner, and will create art related to All Hallows Eve. Kids also have the opportunity to have their faces painted by professional and talented artists from About Face II. Remember to wear a costume! Face painting is first come, first served, so arrive early. All ages.
