WILMINGTON, DE, January 14, 2009 - Join the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) and Hagley Museum and Library for a community celebration recognizing the achievements of Dr. Eugene McGowan on Sunday, February 8, 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the DCCA. Visitors can enjoy the premier showing of Conversation with Dr. Eugene McGowan: African American Psychologist and Community Leader followed by a light reception and self-guided tours of the DCCA galleries. Dr. McGowan was the first African American psychologist in Delaware's public school system. He also was active in many professional and civil rights organizations including the National Mental Health Association, the Delaware Committee for Fair Practices, Delaware Leadership Council, and the Wilmington and Delaware State chapters of the NAACP.

"Dr. McGowan played leadership roles in the field of psychology and civil rights. His contributions made a major impact on the State of Delaware," says Executive Producer Jeanne Nutter.

A light reception celebrating Dr. McGowan's 92nd birthday will follow the film. DVDs are available for purchase at the Hagley Store and the DCCA's shop, Alternatives.

This film is a production of the Hagley Museum and Library. It is an outgrowth of A Separate Place: The Schools that P.S. du Pont Built (2003), a documentary on African American education in Delaware. A Separate Place is an hour-long film about the ambiguous legacy of segregation and desegregation in African American education. It relies on the Pierre S. du Pont papers in Hagley's collections in addition to oral interviews, home movies, photographs, and historical documents.

Hagley Museum and Library collects, preserves, and interprets the unfolding history of American enterprise. For more information, call (302) 658-2400 weekdays or visit www.hagley.org. The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts is a non-collecting art museum dedicated to the advancement of contemporary art. For more information call (302) 656-6466 or visit www.thedcca.org.
