Meet in front of the John Newton House at 510 Jackson Avenue for a Walks through History Tour April 4 in El Dorado. Tour the Murphy-Hill Historic District, an area that represents the growth of the southern Arkansas town from 1880 to 1957. The district contains an array of architectural styles, ranging from Queen Anne to Craftsman to various Period Revival styles. Most notably, the neighborhood reflects the influx of new residents and wealth that accompanied the oil boom in the early 1920s. The event is co-sponsored by the South Arkansas Historical Foundation. A family oriented event celebrating the heritage of Calhoun County takes place in Hampton April 10-11 at the 8th Annual Hogskin Holidays Festival. There will be a pork barbeque cook-off, arts and crafts, a carnival, racing and diving pigs, a children's tractor pull, horseshoes, log loading, antique cars, tractors, and motorcycle show, and gospel entertainment. The 28th Annual Fordyce on the Cotton Belt Festival takes place April 20-25 in Fordyce. The event celebrates the rich railroad heritage of this small town. The Cotton Belt line was constructed in the county in the l880's, leading to the development of the town. The town was named for Samuel Fordyce who surveyed the railroad line and later became president of the railway company. The festival will host a variety of activities including a 5K run, talents shows, a parade, music, and the Redbug Reunion Rally. For more information, phone 870-352-2055.
Music, food and motorcycles are the focus of the 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil and Motorcycle Poker Run in Smackover (http://www.arkansas.com/city-listings/city_detail.aspx?city=Smackover) April 25. The poker run goes through four towns and ends up at Tennyson Park on Broadway and 10th where the crawfish boil will be taking place. The ride will be 98 miles with four stops for cards. The bikes will meet at the traffic light in downtown and the first bike out will be at 10 a.m. and the last bike out will be at 1p.m. The Ouachita River Boys will be playing staring at 6:30 p.m. For more information call 870-725-3521.
