Egypt Makes a Comeback
UNITED KINGDOM, November 9, 2005. Cheapflights.co.uk has revealed that Egypt is one of the top ten most searched-for holidays, hitting the number one spot in September 2005 and continuing the success with a seventh place finish in October. The nation snagged the number one spot a mere month after plummeting to 30th position following bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh on 23 July of this year.
Other surprise surges in October's top 10 destinations were the Dominican Republic, up 17 spots between August and October to grasp third position and New York, which is now the eighth most popular location for a long-stay holiday. Demand for holidays in the traditionally popular Greek and Spanish islands has fallen. Ibiza, ranked as the fifth most searched for locale in August is now ranked 20th due to a combination of celeb overexposure and the fact that the peak Spanish season has come to an end.
Liz Faherty, Director of Business Development for Cheapflights.co.uk, says: "Having experienced comparable terrorist activity, this survey illustrates how supportive and resilient the British are in helping Egypt's resorts get back on their feet.
"Similarly, now that the threat of the hurricane season lessens, the Dominican Republic has also seen a resurgence into the top ten. As the hurricane season ends in November, tourists are being drawn back to this picture-perfect nation due to its laid back atmosphere and advantageous prices!
"Another particularly notable result is New York. As Christmas approaches, a longer stay in the Big Apple makes sense as visitors can combine pre-Christmas bargain shopping with sightseeing to fill a week of fun. The exchange rate makes this an economically sound decision as consumers using Cheapflights.co.uk are finding out to their advantage."
