Smoke-Less in Seattle

Sheraton Seattle announces it will go completely smoke-free on Jan. 1

. October 14, 2008

SEATTLE, WA, December 5, 2005. Smoke-free is the way of the future for one of Seattle's leading hotels. On the heels of the passage of Initiative 901 (Washington's statewide smoking ban initiative), the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers announced today that as of Jan. 1, 2006, it will be a completely non-smoking facility.

"Our decision to maintain a smoke-free hotel was the culmination of a thorough consideration of guest requests and the costs and benefits of maintaining our smoking guestrooms," said Terry Botten, general manager of the Sheraton Seattle. "We felt this was the appropriate response to one of the sensitive issues we've faced during the course of our ongoing expansion project, as we gauge the current and future climate for the hotel industry in Seattle and how we can continue to best serve the diverse groups and individuals who use our facility."

Initiative 901, which expands the state's Clean Indoor Air Act, was approved in all 39 counties. The measure bans smoking in buildings and vehicles open to the public and in places of employment, including within 25 feet of doorways, windows and ventilation openings. It also requires that at least 75 percent of a hotel's rooms have to be non-smoking.
