Hawk's Cay Resort's Recreation Intern Program Receives Industry Certification
FLORIDA KEYS, FL, December 19, 2005. For more than a decade, Hawk's Cay Resort has served as a classroom for college students pursuing degrees. The resort's internship program has attracted students from across the country. One of the most successful has been the recreation department's internship program. At this year's annual Resort and Commercial Recreation Association conference, the resort was awarded the organization's official RCRA Approved Internship Site certification.
Resort recreation manager Pete Capezza, himself a recreation intern at Hawk's Cay while attending the University of Tennessee, has developed a program that gives students a chance to learn all facets of the resort. Students gain experience in resort management, budgets, cross-department training, staff meetings and more.
The Resort and Commercial Recreation Association is a non-profit organization that promotes the recreation industry through service to professionals, educators and students. The internship site certification is awarded to properties that offer premier programs. Resorts must apply for the certification, which includes a site visit by board members and reviews submitted by universities. The certification assures students and their professors that their choice in an internship property will provide them with a quality experience.
"This recognition is a true testament to the program we have developed and the hard work of the students who have gone through it," explains Capezza. "We are confident students will gain valuable life experiences during their internship that will translate to success in their professional careers."
