New Vice-chair for CAST

THE CARIBBEAN, Janaury 30, 2006. Loreto Duffy-Mayers, Director of Environmental Programs for Almond Resorts in Barbados, has been elected Vice-Chair of the Governing Council of the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST).

Loreto was born in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Barbados in 1985. She was educated at University College Dublin where she completed a degree in Economics, Geography and Maths and a higher Diploma in Education. She also pursued a Diploma in Marketing at the UK Institute of Marketing. She first became involved in the environmental arena in Barbados in 1994 while working for Women in Development - an agency responsible for assisting women to set up their own businesses. She held the position of Environmental Manager in two Green Globe 21 certified hotels - Coconut Court and the Casuarina Beach Club - prior to her recent appointment as Director of Environmental Programs at Almond Resorts. While she was at Coconut Court, the hotel achieved Green Globe 21 certification and won the 2002 CHA/AMEX Green Hotel of the Year Award.

Since her move to the Casuarina Beach Club, the hotel won several Global awards including the 2004 World Legacy Award sponsored by National Geographic Traveler Magazine and Conservation International, the 2004 Responsibletravel.com award at WTM in London, and most recently, the 2005 WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow award in Delhi, India.

Loreto joined Almond Resorts in June 2005 as Director of Environmental Programs following their acquisition of the Casuarina Beach Club.
