PATA Working on Risk Guide
BANGKOK, Thailand, March 29, 2006. PATA is teaming up with APEC's International Centre for Sustainable Tourism, the Australian Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources and UNWTO to update Tourism Risk Management for the Asia Pacific Region, the definitive guidebook for managing crises and disasters.
The new edition of the book, which was first published in 2004, will contain the latest information on best practices since the tsunami, hurricanes Rita and Katrina and Cyclone Larry. Three training modules on risk management will be developed, including a half-day module introducing the principles of risk management, a half-day module on how tourism SMEs can develop risk management strategies; and a full-day module on how destinations should develop risk management strategies.
Trainer's guides and participant workbooks will also be published for each module.
To be freely available to all APEC economies by the end of 2006, both Tourism Risk Management and the training materials will be published in English, Indonesian, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese.
PATA Vice President-Development Mr Peter Semone said: "It is important to document and learn from recent crises. By creating user-friendly and multilingual workshops and training material we hope to better prepare tourism stakeholders from all over the region to handle future calamities."
