InterContinental San Juan Begins Casino Renovation

Enhancing Guest Experience

. September 20, 2009

ISLA VERDE, PR, September 18, 2009 - The InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino is in the process of refurbishing its casino, which hasn't been upgraded since 2003.

The refurbishment includes new design, carpeting, lighting and new state-of-the-art slot machines from four different gaming vendors-International Game Technology, Aristocrat, WMS Gaming and Atronic-some of which have been installed.

Sharon Kilmartin, general manager at the InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino, emphasized the importance of the property's casino renovation as part of its overall branding and community strategy.

"The casino is very important to any hotel. For us, it not only represents an important revenue stream, but also is critical for connecting with the local community," she said.

The casino (described as an important amenity for hotel guests and locals) represents about 25% of the hotel's total revenue and employs over 100 people.

The renovation of the casino, which is scheduled for September 21, will be done in three phases and be completed in 90 days.

"We are not going to close the casino [during construction]," Kilmartin said.

Design Works, headed by Rosario & Falgas, will be in charge of adapting customer preferences in the casino, such as providing the sophisticated use of contemporary materials combining technology with patterns, texture and lighting.

"The result is a layering effect that brings depth and richness to the existing space, adding a new dimension to the gaming industry said William Figueroa, casino director at the InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino. "Crystallized wall coverings, silk pendants with glass beads off-shooting from coppered ceilings and a sky blue translucent ceiling at the main entrance are only a few elements contributing to the enhancement of this new eclectic concept."
