SPTO Targets Emerging Tourist Markets

. October 14, 2008

FEBRUARY 14, 2007. The South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) has announced the Fiji Visitors Bureau is focussing on bringing more tourists from emerging markets like China (PRC), India and southern parts of Latin America. Bureau Chief Executive Officer Mr Viliame Gavoka said the bureau's strategy is to focus on emerging markets and they qualify those based on their sizes in terms of population, economic growth and the development of outbound travel within the countries.

"With these criteria, the emerging markets for Fiji are China (PRC), India and countries on the southern parts of Latin America, that is Brazil, Argentina and Chile," he said. "A lot of work is now happening in the emerging markets and we are not alone there as other countries like our big neighbours Australia and New Zealand are doing the same thing."

Fiji welcomed 3,120 tourists from India and 2,894 from China (PRC) in 2006. Mr Gavoka said Chinese Taipei shows a lot of promise with its vibrant economy, but airline connectivity continues to be a challenge. Last year 851 Taiwanese came to Fiji for holidays. He said that Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Malaysia would be included in their marketing strategies in the years to come.
