Longboat Key, FL - July 17, 2012 - Longboat Key Club Moorings is proud to announce that it has been designated a Florida Clean Marina, for the tenth consecutive year. The Florida Clean Marina program is administered through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and recognizes the voluntary and proactive efforts of marina facilities and their commitment to environmental stewardship. Through the program, participating marinas receive assistance with implementing Best Management Practices, ongoing educational opportunities and access to a network of other Clean Marina designees.
To achieve this highly respected accolade, a marina must implement a set of environmental measures that are designed to protect Florida's waterways. These measures address critical environmental issues such as sensitive habitat, waste management, storm water control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness.
With over 1,350 miles of coastline, 50,000 miles of inland and coastal rivers and streams, over 700 freshwater springs and countless lakes, Floridians depend on water more than any other natural resource. The continued success of the state's $56 billion tourism industry, its $14 billion marine industry and $6.6 billion fishing industry are dependent upon maintaining the quality and cleanliness of these waterways.
“We are tremendously proud to once again be recognized as a Florida Clean Marina, for the 10th year in a row. Our members respect the fact that we place such a high priority on environmental stewardship and the majority of the boaters that lease slips from us place a high value on our participation in the program. It really says something about who we are and where our priorities lie,” said Michael Welly, General Manager of Longboat Key Club & Resort. “Boating and water activities are a way of life for those of us living in Florida and anyone involved with those activities, whether affiliated by business or as a leisure boater, should bear the responsibility of stewardship of one of our most important, and fragile, assets. I have seen awareness for the program grow over the years and I am proud that we promote our participation in the program quite actively. I encourage all boaters to make the extra effort to support businesses that embrace this crucial and forward thinking philosophy. Participation in this program should be the goal of every water-related business in Florida.”
