Interpol Helps Out with CARICOM
MARCH 2, 2007. Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble has expressed continued commitment to enhancing the partnership between Interpol and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in securing the region.
Noble, accompanied by local Interpol officials met with the Acting Director and key officials of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and CARICOM Operations Planning and Coordinating Staff (COPACS) in Port of Spain on Tuesday.
He said Interpol is steadfast in helping all CWC host countries secure the region's borders by allowing the region's security officials access to Interpol's global border protection network -- part of which is a database -- "MIND/FIND technology" which will be fully operational before the start of Cricket World Cup 2007.
Interpol officers are also included at CARICOM's Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre located in Trinidad, which means immediate and centralized access to other Interpol services and databases for CARICOM security and intelligence officials. This is further complemented by the operations of Interpol's national central bureaus (NCBs) in all CARICOM member states.
"Now, for the first time, we have a network of border protection in place that is not in place anywhere in the world, and I am very satisfied," Noble said.
This revolutionary security measure has already enabled the barring of 29 persons from entering the region since its implementation two months ago. Those identified were criminal suspects and those in possession of stolen travel documents. This detection record over the past two months compares with 97 documents seized between 2002 and the end of 2006.
The "MIND/FIND" technology allows airport and seaport officials to thoroughly check the passports of potential visitors against Interpol's database which contains information on more than 13 million stolen and lost documents from over 120 countries.
The Secretary General met with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, The Honourable Patrick Manning, Minister of National Security, Senator The Honourable Martin Joseph and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul on Monday to discuss global border protection network and security plans for the CWC as part of his five regional destination visit to the region in monitoring the readiness of Security arrangements for CWC 2007.
IMPACS, which in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, coordinated the Secretary General's visit, has expressed gratitude to Mr. Noble and Interpol for having supported the region's security efforts, so making it difficult for unwanted elements to enter the region.
