Visit California honored tourism destinations and attractions across California for excellence in tourism marketing at the organization's biennial Poppy Awards, held Feb. 15 in San Francisco.

Terranea Resort is proud to announce that it was selected as the winner in the Influencer Campaign and Social Media Campaign category for its respective campaigns. The resort's Best Influencer Campaign titled, "Terranea Resort Ambassador Campaign," reflected the optimal use of influencer marketing to help advocate for the brand and target consumers to achieve social media engagement, reach, number of impressions, website traffic, pick up and social media integration. The resort's Best Social Media Campaign titled, "Rediscover You," reflected creative and effective use of paid advertising on social media channels to amplify the campaign and employ social media to feature the California resort destination. Terranea was also named a finalist for Best Recovery Campaign and Destination Stewardship & Sustainable Travel Award categories.

"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized as a travel and tourism ambassador and innovative leader on behalf of our industry and Visit California," says Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President of Terranea Resort. "We remain optimistic and committed to the strategic growth and success of our resort destination during this period of rebounding and recovery."

"The past two years were filled with unprecedented challenges for tourism as communities and businesses across the state struggled with pandemic-era hardships," said Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California. "The creativity and innovation demonstrated by the tourism industry is truly astounding, and it proves how forward-thinking California remains. The work celebrated at the Poppy Awards underscore our state's perseverance and has shown the world California is open for business."

Beteta, alongside Visit California's board officers, presented the 2022 Poppy Awards during the 14th annual Visit California Outlook Forum, held Feb. 14-15 at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco and attended by more than 500 tourism industry leaders.

A panel of industry marketing experts selected the winners of the Poppy Awards in eight categories, awarding winners in both business and destination categories.

Hotel Human Resources: The Great Resignation

Hotels have always struggled with the task of attracting and retaining qualified employees. At any given moment, hotels are consistently understaffed which makes providing quality guest services a persistent challenge. Additionally, as a consequence of the pandemic, there has been a mass exodus of workers who left their employers and haven't returned. This phenomenon has become known as the Great Resignation. In one month alone last year, over 900,000 employees left hospitality jobs, affecting all areas of operations including frontline workers,  restaurant and housekeeping staff, and hotel management. To overcome these challenges, Human Resource departments are implementing a variety of solutions. First, they are reassessing their wage and benefits guidelines in an effort to become more competitive. They are also leveraging digital technology to attract and retain talent, and to improve the employee experience. The goal is to centralize communications, enhance employee engagement, empower independent decision-making, and expand educational opportunities. The March Hotel Business Review will explore what some HR professionals are doing to address these critical employment issues in their respective departments.
