. October 14, 2008

NEW CASTLE, DE, November 26, 2007. The Christmas season in the early 1800's was a time of festive balls, dinner parties, and parlor games. This season, the Read House & Gardens in New Castle, part of the Historical Society of Delaware, presents "Celebrating the Season." Visitors to the Read House will get a glimpse of holiday customs of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and learn how today's Christmas traditions evolved from this earlier time.

Large gatherings of friends and family would come together, feasting and entertaining themselves with games such as Charades and bobbing for apples. In the Read House kitchen, visitors will experience how these fine family parties affected the staff. With so many guests visiting, the kitchen was always abuzz with activity. From preparing large feasts and special desserts like Twelfth Night cake to increased housework, a servant's day began before dawn and lasted into the night.

The Laird family rooms will reflect a traditional holiday celebration that visitors will find familiar, complete with Christmas trees, holly china in the dining room, and New Year's revelry in the tap room.

The Read House and Gardens, operated by the Historical Society of Delaware, is located on The Strand in historic New Castle, Delaware. The holiday display runs through January 6, 2008.
