Marilyn Carlson Nelson One of 'America'S Best Leaders'

MINNEAPOLIS, MI, October 23, 2006. Marilyn Carlson Nelson, chairman and chief executive officer of Carlson Companies, has been selected as one of "America's Best Leaders," according to U.S News & World Report.

The publication's second annual listing was released today. In a series of profiles and essays, "America's Best Leaders" presents the country's foremost current leaders, explores critical elements of leading in the 21st century, and celebrates the far-reaching accomplishments of the 20 leaders being recognized.

"America's Best Leaders" were selected by an independent committee convened by the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The mission of CPL is to further leadership for the common good through excellence in leadership research, education and development.

Mrs. Nelson leads one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. With operations in more than 150 countries, Carlson specializes in hotel, restaurant, travel, cruise and marketing services.

For the third consecutive year, Mrs. Nelson recently was named as one of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women" by Forbes. She is vice chair of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, which works with the U.S. Commerce Department to determine how to increase the number of international visitors to the United States and to help create a national tourism policy.

A board member of Exxon-Mobil and the Mayo Clinic Foundation, Mrs. Nelson also is a board member of the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy and serves on the Board of Overseers at the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

In addition, she serves on the Singapore Tourism Board, is past chair of the Travel Industry Association of America, and a member of the World Travel and Tourism Council, and the Business Roundtable.

Mrs. Nelson is a member of the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum and has co-chaired the forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. She currently serves on that organization's Board of Governors for Travel and Tourism.

The 2006 "America's Best Leaders" listing includes Michael Bloomberg, mayor, City of New York; Warren Buffett, chief executive officer, Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.; Frank Gehry, architect and partner, Gehry Partners LLC; A.G. Lafley, chairman of the board, president and CEO, The Proctor & Gamble Company; Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of jazz, Lincoln Center; and Sandra Day O'Connor former associate justice, United States Supreme Court.
