Delta Hotels Expands Green Initiatives with Hybrid Heating
Partnership with Sempa Power reduces GHG emissions at Delta Whistler Village Suites by 45%
JUNE 17, 2008. After reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent at the Delta Whistler Village Suites, Sempa Power Systems Ltd., the developer of the Sempa Hybrid Heating SystemTM, is proud to announce that it has been contracted to install its patent-pending technology at the Delta Sun Peaks Resort and Delta Winnipeg.
Since installing the hybrid heating system in January 2008, Delta Whistler Village Suites has experienced a 45 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, cutting the hotel's carbon footprint by approximately 250 tonnes. On average, Sempa users have experienced a 10 to 30 per cent reduction in GHG levels.
'Delta Hotels is committed to making all of our properties greener and to reducing our impacts on the environment,' said Gordon Johnson, Regional Vice President, BC region, Delta Hotels. 'Our partnership with Sempa Power has had dramatic results and we're happy to be extending the program.'
In addition to the dramatic GHG emissions reductions, the hybrid heating system has cut the hotel's energy expenses by $70,000, a 30 per cent reduction in total energy costs. The system also has reduced the overall energy consumption at the hotel by 10 per cent, or 10,000 gJ.
Sempa's hybrid heating technology automatically switches between fossil fuel sources and electricity depending on which source is the most cost efficient at any point in the day. This in turn minimizes costs, decreases GHG emissions and increases energy efficiency. In 2007, Sempa received the Deloitte Technology Green 15 Award as one of the fastest growing technology companies in Canada.
Sempa will soon begin installation of its hybrid heating system at the Delta Sun Peaks Resort and Delta Winnipeg, and is in talks with Delta Hotels in Vancouver and Victoria for similar projects. Most major hotels and resorts in the community of Whistler, BC, are using Sempa's hybrid heating system.
