NYLO Providence/Warwick to Utilize Renewable Energy

AUGUST 5, 2008. NYLO Providence/Warwick sets another standard for living a loft lifestyle in Rhode Island - using renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and hydro to better meet the demands of its guests in an environmentally-friendly climate. Through a unique partnership with People's Power & Light in Rhode Island, NYLO Providence/Warwick has become the first hotel in the state to open completely powered by renewable energy from local resources such as the Portsmouth Abbey wind turbine, solar panels on Scituate High School, low-impact hydro from Pawtucket Hydro, and dozens of other installations throughout Rhode Island.

"This is great step for us in terms of helping our neighbors and meeting the energy demands of our guests."

Under this agreement with People's Power & Light, NYLO will purchase New England GreenStart credits equivalent to its daily electricity usage. This will then be matched to local renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, biomass, and small hydroelectric plants from New England, and sent to the regional power grid to adequately meet the hotel's daily power demands. In the near future, the New England GreenStart portfolio will also include hydro being developed by Struever Brothers, Eccles and Rouse as part of the Royal Mills residential development on the Pawtuxet River in West Warwick.

"NYLO Hotels stands out," said Larry Chretien, executive director of the People's Power & Light. "They are now our largest customer in Rhode Island - by far. We hope that other businesses and households will follow the lead of NYLO Hotels. Rhode Islanders can and must make the switch from imported fossil fuels to clean, local, renewable energy sources. Fortunately, consumers of all kinds - residential and commercial, are increasingly getting the message."

NYLO Providence/Warwick is also helping the environment and community in other ways. For example, the hotel will provide recycling bins on each floor for bottles and paper. In the guest lofts, air conditioning units will turn on automatically when guests enter and shut off automatically when they leave. The Loft, NYLO's signature ultra-living social area, will also offer a selection of organic and bio-dynamically farmed alcoholic beverages, and local farmers and local purveyors will be sourced for food purchases.

Additional green features include: recycled paper in desk pads and folio binders; NYLO's exclusive line bath and body products also comes in recycled bottles; and the pure botanicals are biodegradable and DEA-free with no chemical preservatives like Paraben. In addition, NYLO's Everything Green construction practices call for using building material and design features that promote conservation such as concrete and brick to stabilize indoor temperature and reduce heating and cooling costs, and oversized windows and window walls to admit a lot of sunlight and further decrease electricity consumption.

All NYLO hotels will incorporate renewable energy. Wind power, for example, supplies approximately half of the energy needs at NYLO Plano at Legacy, which was the first hotel to open for NYLO, and is located outside of Dallas. For Energy Star certification, the hotel also has one of the most robust, Web-based utility-managed software systems available to track conservation and cut consumption.

Set to open this summer in Warwick, Rhode Island, this unique, boutique-style hotel will offer visitors a new lofty-type experience when visiting New England and the Ocean State with high ceilings, large windows and wide-open spaces. Designed by Stephane Dupoux, one of America's Top 20 architect/designers, the property features 163 guestrooms, called guest lofts, and more than 1,450 square feet of meeting and event space.
