MARCH 3, 2009 - Starwood Capital Group Global, LLC, a leading private investment firm, today named John McCarthy as Global Head of Asset Management, giving him oversight over Starwood's worldwide real estate portfolio. Mr. McCarthy joins Starwood Capital from Lehman Brothers, where he most recently served as Global Co-Head of Asset Management for Lehman Brothers Real Estate Private Equity. While there, he managed the assets of five separate funds with more than circa $40 billion of assets. He will be based in Starwood Capital's headquarters in Greenwich, Connecticut and be part of the senior management team that reports directly to Chairman and CEO Barry Sternlicht. Mr. McCarthy formally joined the company on March 2, 2009.
Upon Mr. McCarthy's appointment, Jeffrey Dishner, who currently serves as Head of Asset Management, will return to helping lead the acquisitions team for Starwood Capital, allowing him more time to focus on the vast opportunities that lie ahead.
Mr. Sternlicht said: "I am extremely pleased to welcome John to Starwood Capital. Over the past 20 years, John has developed a strong reputation in the real estate management business, and his global expertise and management skills will be indispensible in protecting and enhancing the value of our assets around the world. I know he shares our belief that asset and portfolio management are particularly critical in these turbulent markets to maximize the value of each asset we own."
"I am very excited to be joining such a well respected company during this opportunistic time in the market," said Mr. McCarthy. "Starwood Capital's broad asset base and unparalleled expertise in the real estate space has left it well positioned to navigate the current economic storm and find value in certain sectors and regions that other firms simply might miss. I have watched the firm under Barry's leadership grow and flourish in good markets and bad, and I am eager to lend my knowledge and experience to the mix.
As Global Co-Head of Asset Management at Lehman Brothers, Mr. McCarthy oversaw more than 150 transactions globally and held responsibility for the company's activities in Europe, the UK, and India.
