Condo-Hotels May Gain Approval for North Myrtle Beach

. October 14, 2008

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC, January 19, 2006. This city's planning commission has voted to recommend to the City Council that it allow condominium-hotels in the resort/residential district. The district is largely residential but allows the operation of hotels and motels. According to local reports, the council may approve the commission's recommendation because council members initiated the change.

The planning commission's recommendation will go before the council February 6 for the first vote. Mayor Marilyn Hatley said prior to a recent planning commission meeting, the community had expressed an interest in allowing resort accommodations -in which people can stay short- or long-term- in the resort residential district so a condo could be run as a hotel.

The council has discussed making other possible changes in that district, including graduated setbacks - making buildings narrower the taller they get - and height restrictions based on lot sizes, according to reports.

The change also would allow condominium hotels to have on-premises buildings such as restaurants, which Hatley said would be one of the benefits to the city. Hotels and motels in that district currently are not allowed to have restaurants, said Greg Lipscomb, the city's principal planner according to reports.

Hatley said allowing condominium hotels in the district also would benefit the city with more accommodations and hospitality taxes.
