Five-Star Golf Experience At Pezula, South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA, February 17, 2006. The ***|** luxury Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa, opened on 1st February 2005, is fast securing a reputation for being home to one of South Africa's finest golf courses; boasting landscape and views second to none. Located on the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean and lagoon, adjacent to the town of Knysna on the renowned Garden Route in the Western Cape, the 18-hole Pezula championship golf course combines the best of nature with world-class facilities.
Designed by Ron Fream and David Dale from Golfplan USA (designers of Golf de Fregate - France and the Serapong Course - Singapore), the course is flanked by indigenous forest, flora and fauna and offers stunning views of the surrounding coast and mountains. It has already been compared to the likes of Pebble Beach.
The Pezula Championship Golf course is designed to include a full range of shots, making it a challenging, rewarding and complete golf experience for players of all levels. Signature holes have been earmarked as the 13th and 14th, with their breathtaking views over the cliffs and the ocean. Club professional, Jeff Clause, describes them: Hole 13 (416-494m, par 5) "Did you bring two rolls of film or an extra memory chip? This amazing par 5 drops over 200 feet to the Indian Ocean from tee to green. Reachable with a well-positioned drive, the second shot success will be determined by the lie (level or downhill). Look back to the tee when you have tapped in for birdie ... it's breathtaking."
Hole 14 (223-289m, par 4) "South Africa's Postcard to Golf! This short par 4 plays above the cliffs of the ocean. Its relative short length will tempt the big hitter to have a go at greatness. However, a lay-up to the edge of the fairway will leave only a short wedge to this well bunkered green. More photos here as the backdrop is the best in the world."
The Clubhouse facilities are in keeping with the overall five-star experience and include a terrace, restaurant, bar, private lounge and library, pro shop and short game practice area. The resort's golf carts are fully equipped with GPS systems, computerised scoring and the facility to pre-order lunch.
In 2001, just a few months after it opened, the Course was awarded Best New Golf Course in South Africa. In February 2005 Compleat Golfer rated it a Five Star Golf Experience.
The average round takes 4 hours 50 minutes, including a half-way break. Hotel guests benefit from reduced green fees, which start from R425 (approx lb35). Advance bookings and handicaps are required. A tournament or event is featured every week throughout the year (2006 calendar now available).
Other courses nearby include Simola, a new Nicklaus signature course 15 minutes away, the Knysna Golf Club (5 mins), Plettenberg Bay Country Club (25 mins) and Goose Valley, Plett (35 mins).
Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa comprises 78 suites in individual lodges, offering stunning views of the mountains or the ocean. All are fully equipped with a mini kitchen offering a fully stocked fridge and pantry, with homemade treats such as cookies, shortbread, biltong and crisps.
The hotel's restaurant, Zachary's, is headed by executive chef Geoffrey Murray who uses local organic products to produce signature dishes including prawn tartlet served with red onion reduction, sugar-cured salmon trout with fennel seed and star anise and white peppercorn cr`eme brul'ee. The restaurant is complemented with an excellent selection of over 5,000 bottles of both local and international wines.
The resort's award-winning spa (recently awarded Best Spa in South Africa) has world-class facilities consisting of a superbly equipped gym, indoor 12m heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, sunbed, nail bar, hair salon, juice bar and nine secluded treatment rooms, offering a diverse range of treatments by skilled therapists.
Pezula can be accessed by road along the scenic Garden Route from Cape Town. Daily flights connect Johannesburg and Cape Town to George Airport, just under an hour's drive from Knysna. Guests can also charter the hotel's private helicopter or eight-seater jet, which are available to transport guests to nearby attractions, golf courses and destinations further a-field in South Africa.
