The Sky is Falling at Rosario
EASTSOUND, WA, June 22, 2005. This July and August, stars will "shower" Rosario Resort & Spa guests as they take in the wonder of the annual Perseid (Pur-seed) meteor shower. Rosario Resort & Spa, a RockResort in the San Juan Islands, will host two complementary "star talks" by Orcas Island resident Sam Windsor, followed by a bonfire on Rosario 's beach on Cascade Bay, August 11 and 14, 2005 beginning at 10:45 p.m.
A veteran speaker, Sam Windsor has taught astronomy classes at Orcas Island High School. He co-authored the book "The Recent Organization of the Solar System." He is a retired naval architect and marine engineer currently running a private consulting practice specializing in maritime forensics.
The Perseids is one of the most well known meteor showers, with its first documented sighting in 36 AD. It occurs annually in late July and August as the Earth flies through the orbital path of Swift-Tuttle comet. When the earth passes through the comet dust, it creates bright streaks of light across the night sky. The shower will peak on Thursday, August 11, with an expected 40-80 meteors per hour.
In honor of The Perseids, Rosario Resort & Spa is also featuring its signature "Perseids Punch" cocktail in the bar and restaurant. The drink is a combination of Malibu, Peach Schnapps, equal parts champagne, orange and pineapple juice with a float of Chambord raspberry liquor on top. The drink is garnished with an orange wedge and cherry.
"The Point Lawn is the highest point on the property and has an excellent, unobstructed view of the sky and bay," said Jim Bankson, Rosario Resort & Spa general manager. "This is a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Rosario and Orcas while experiencing this great learning opportunity for families."
Rates for August 11 or 14, 2005 start at $199 for standard guestroom accommodations and $ 239 for suite accommodations. Prices are based on double occupancy, do not include tax or gratuity and are based on space availability.
