Fiji Hotel Occupancy Slumps
FIJI, March 16, 2006. Hotel occupancy rates throughout Fiji have dropped to an all-time low as the unstable political climate takes its toll, The Fiji Times reports.
With travel warnings from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and New Zealand, resorts have experienced a fall of up to 20 per cent in occupancy compared to the same period last year.
But while the stand-off between the Government and the military is listed as one of the matters of concern, stakeholders believe a recently introduced piece of legislation is another cause for the drop in popularity of Fiji as holiday destination.
Local stakeholders believe the recently introduced Bed Tax, which has been labelled as an ill-conceived measure to recover money brought about by the removal of Value Added Tax, has proven to be a drawback for wholesalers promoting Fiji.
