The World's Greatest Drive?
PERTH, Australia, July 11, 2005. In 2006 the longest golf course in the world will open in Australia. Stretching some 1,400 kms, from tee off in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia to the 18th hole in Ceduna, South Australia, the course reaches right across the Nullarbor Plain. Golfers can follow the wide and sealed Eyre Highway from end to end, one of Australia's classic road journeys, stopping off to play each hole at a roadhouse (petrol station) along the way.
The so-called Nullarbor Links course has been planned by a consortium of Outback councils and designed to encourage more tourists to visit their out of the way places. There's no problem about avoiding bunkers, since most of the course consists of one big sandtrap, but you may have to share the road with a plane; the highway is occasionally used as a runway by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
