JULY 24, 2009 - An international conference at Canterbury Christ Church University was hailed a huge success by over 150 delegates who attended the event from all over the world.

The annual Leisure Studies Association Conference, organised by the University's Centre for Sport, Physical Education and Activity Research (SPEAR), focused on 'Leisure Experiences: Participating, Planning, Providing'.

Over 100 academics from across the world, including delegates from Latvia, Taiwan, Australia and Israel, attended the event presenting to colleagues and peers a broad range of topics, including hot spring tourism and heritage cities.

Dr Ian Wellard, Associate Director of SPEAR, said: "The whole event was a huge success, not only in terms of a stimulating academic conference but also as an extremely enjoyable experience for visitors to the University and Canterbury. The conference will also have a longer lasting impact in that a series of edited volumes containing papers presented will be published."

Professor Jan Druker, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University, Colin Carmichael, Chief Executive of Canterbury City Council and Professor Scott Fleming, Chair of the Leisure Studies Association attended the event.
