The hospitality and tourism industry represents one of the city's top economic drivers, generating more than $527 million in taxes for the City of San Francisco. In 2008, San Francisco welcomed 16.4 million visitors, an increase of 1.7 percent over 2007. These visitors spent $8.52 billion in 2008, an increase of 3.3 percent over the previous year. Tourism supported 72,856 jobs in 2008, an increase of .9 percent from 2007, with an annual payroll of $2.01 billion.

One of the key objectives of the SFCVB's social media campaign is to drive more visitors to San Francisco's official visitor web site, www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com. More than three million unique visitors visited www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2009.
