Maia Spa Launches in Seychelles

. October 14, 2008

JANUARY 2, 2007. The Southern Sun Hotels group has opened a luxury retreat and spa in the Seychelles called Maia.

Situated on the Anse Louis beach on the island of Mah'e, the 27 million euro retreat consists of 30 air-conditioned one-bedroom villas - each with an infinity pool and a sunken bath - and a boutique La Prairie spa.

The spa was designed by Bill Bensley of Studio in Bangkok and features three treatment rooms and one meditation pavilion offering yoga, pilates and t'ai chi as well as holistic treatments utilising locally-sourced, seasonal Seychellois ingredients.

Other facilities at Maia include three swimming pools plus snorkelling and kayaking in the Indian Ocean, although there is a ban on any mechanised watersports.

The government-backed project may be extended to other 'upscale destinations' around the world.
