James Barrett Named Executive Chef at The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa

. October 14, 2008

CAREFREE, Ariz. (Aug. 4, 2005) - The Boulders Resort and Golden Door(R) Spa has named veteran chef James Barrett as the new executive chef for the AAA Five Diamond desert hideaway. In this position, Barrett will implement new menus in the award-winning Latilla, the resort's signature fine dining establishment. He will also oversee culinary operations at The Boulders' six additional restaurants, including Palo Verde.

Barrett has an innovative vision for the storied Latilla dining room. He says, "Latilla should be a destination in itself for anyone who wants an experience at a restaurant playing a leading role on the contemporary world stage." Barrett plans to accomplish this by developing a new menu of "world eclectic food, expanded beyond the traditional contemporary American menu with the freshest of seasonal local ingredients and dishes."

With almost 20 years of industry experience, Barrett began cooking professionally in Annapolis, Md., focusing on regional cuisine and specializing in Chesapeake Bay seafood. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Studies, Barrett is a two-time American Culinary Federation silver medal winner of hot food competitions, Mid-Atlantic Region. Prior to joining The Boulders, he was executive chef of the Bristol Hotel, a Washington D.C. west end boutique hotel, as well as the City Center hotel.

Latilla celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and has been named by Gourmet magazine as one of the nation's most outstanding restaurants. The restaurant routinely wins AAA Four-Diamond awards for its extraordinary setting and service, creative menu and world-class wine list. Latilla's design features hand-sculpted booths facing an adjoining outdoor patio with an adobe wood-burning fireplace against the 12-million-year-old granite boulder formation for which the resort is named.

The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa features 160 guest casitas and 55 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas, eight restaurants and a lounge, eight tennis courts, two championship, 18-hole golf courses and a 33,000-square-foot Golden Door Spa.
