Winners Announced for First Cornell School of Hotel Administration GMP Scholarship
DECEMBER 9, 2009 - The Cornell School of Hotel Administration (SHA) is pleased to announce the three winners of the General Managers Program (GMP) scholarship. This is the first time the school has sponsored a scholarship for the GMP, although similar scholarships have been previously available through industry organizations and Cornell Hotel Society chapters.
The winners--Ulrika Anderrson, executive assistant manager of the Radisson SAS Hotel in Malmö, Sweden; Mary Crowe, general manager of the Villagio Inn & Spa in Yountville, CA; and Bobby Ong, regional vice president of sales and marketing at Kempinski Hotels SA in Beijing, China--have each been awarded $3,000 to attend the January 2010 GMP on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, NY.
"The Cornell GMP is the premier program of its kind in the industry. We are delighted to award these scholarships as a way to support these highly motivated hoteliers in their quest for knowledge. It is yet another way for Cornell to support the hotel industry," says Tom Kline, executive director of the program.
Offered by the SHA Office of Executive Education, the GMP is a world-class, 10-day experience for general managers and their next-in-commands. With the guidance of Cornell faculty, participants gain invaluable knowledge about specific, workable solutions to key strategic hotel-management issues. They leave Cornell ready to achieve new levels of business and career success.
The GMP is also an important networking opportunity. The program has hosted more than 1,200 participants from 78 countries over the past quarter-century. As a result, participants gain an invaluable connection to an international network of elite hoteliers. "Participating in the GMP opens up great opportunities to achieve an international career in the hospitality business," says Anderrson.
The school awarded the scholarships based upon applicants' responses to two essay questions, which demonstrated their commitment to the industry. Each winners clearly expressed a drive to achieve both personal goals and business success for his or her organization. "Winning the scholarship gave me the confidence that I made the right decision to embark on this program and to pursue my career as a general manager," states Ong.
