Stowe Mountain Club to Open in June 2007

A New Golf Course Worthy of the 'Stowe' Name Helps Transform a Legendary Ski Resort to a Four-Seaso

. October 14, 2008

STOWE, VT, February 14, 2007. Big changes are afoot in Stowe, Vermont Perhaps none are more symbolic of this legendary ski town's transformation to a genuine four season destination than the stunning Stowe Mountain Club, set to be officially unveiled in June, 2007. Created by renowned golf course designer Bob Cupp, the 18-hole, par 72 "wilderness" course winds dramatically along the lower reaches of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, to an elevation of more than 1800 feet.

The course affords stunning views of the mountains, a sparkling lake, and Stowe Mountain Resort itself. The resort course will be available to Stowe Mountain Club members, as well as guests of the extraordinary new Stowe Mountain Lodge, a luxury resort hotel being built at the base of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak and set to open in fall 2007.

Stowe Mountain Club is a four-season private club with unprecedented golf, alpine and spa facilities located at Spruce Peak at Stowe, Vermont's newest luxury resort and residential community. All residential owners at Spruce Peak, including owners of the Front Four residences at Stowe Mountain Lodge, are eligible to join Stowe Mountain Club.

Stowe Mountain Club was designed as an extremely environmentally conscious project, and is on track to become the first in Vermont to achieve Audubon International Signature Program certification. The golf course, for instance, is surrounded by 2,000 protected acres of pristine land. No homes were built along the course, affording a remarkably natural golfing experience, and allowing for protected habitat within the surrounding woodlands. Another centerpiece of this environmental effort is state-of-the-art course irrigation, recycling water from the man-made Peregrine Lake, which also serves as the source of snowmaking water for Stowe Mountain Resort.

Stowe Mountain Club spans nearly 6,500 yards with a dramatic elevation gain (400'+), allowing for sweeping views of Peregrine Lake and the Little River Valley below. The golf course is a regulation par 72 in the classic configurations of two par fives and two par threes on each nine and uses the slope in spectacular fashion, occasionally making short holes seem much longer.

Course designer Bob Cupp commented, "Once every few decades, a spectacular sight for golf appears. Such is the case at the foot of Mount Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont. This land provides a feeling of grandeur in the long views, and yet a certain coziness within the engulfing cradle of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. It provides members and guests with unforgettable golf in the hills of Vermont." The proud designer went on to add, "There may be no finer collection of great short par fours anywhere in America."

The golf shots throughout are completely diverse. Many of the longer holes play on level ground, as a gift of the large lake. Other holes present fascinating strategic challenges, sometimes asking the player to call on strength to play up the slope, or conversely calling on the player's moxie to position the ball in the best location for the most advantageous approach in to the greens. On several occasions, elevated tee shots allow players to 'go for it' and, as the ball sails away into the open spaces with the grand and pastoral long view of the Little River Valley as a backdrop there is a particular excitement.

Stowe Mountain Club's fourth hole, one of the more demanding of the front nine, is particularly picturesque and quintessentially "New England." The back tee plays across a scenically winding mountain road and the three forward tees are pedestals set upon dramatic boulder walls, indigenous to Stowe. A brook crosses under the road and behind the forward tees where it disappears into the trees right of the meadow. The yardage calls for a long iron, with the slope to the right of the bunkers sharply downhill. Trees are lined behind the back slope, but the entire right side is an open meadow.

Additional course amenities include a 6,500 square-foot practice green and chipping area, built to USGA specifications, as well as a Golf Cottage, hosting a pro shop, dining and lounge and terrace. Complimentary bag storage and locker facilities are available to club members and resort guests. The course is overseen by Walter Frame, Operations Manager, Stowe Mountain Club and David Bennett, PGA, Director of Golf, Stowe Mountain Club.
