The Alpina Gstaad Joins Preferred Hotels & Resorts

First New Five-star Hotel in Gstaad in 100 Years Opens December 1

. September 21, 2012

GSTAAD, Switzerland - September 21, 2012 - The Alpina Gstaad, the newest five-star hotel in 100 years to open in that charming Swiss Alpine village, has been accepted into Preferred Hotels™ & Resorts, the ultimate collection of exceptional hotels and resorts and a brand of Preferred Hotel Group™. On schedule to open on December 1, The Alpina Gstaad was granted this new affiliation to recognize its wealth of amenities: a choice of three restaurants including the first European outpost of MEGU, a 21,500-square-foot Six Senses Spa, a Havana-inspired cigar lounge and a private cinema.

Featuring more than 250 of the world's most desirable destinations, the Preferred Hotels & Resorts brand conveys the highest standards in hospitality and service as it celebrates the individuality of its members. Each hotel in the collection is a destination in its own right, delivering highly intuitive, personalized guest experiences in memorably authentic surroundings.

Set on five acres in the exclusive hilltop area of Oberbort, The Alpina Gstaad overlooks the village which is nestled in picturesque Saanenland in the heart of the Bernese Alps. Part of a $337 million luxury development, The Alpina Gstaad will have three restaurants: MEGU with its sophisticated Japanese cuisine, a traditional Swiss stübli and Restaurant Sommet with Michelin-star chef Marcus Lindner. Offering holistic treatments and rejuvenation programs, Six Senses Spa, Gstaad's first internationally-known spa brand, will feature 12 treatment rooms including the Hammam, the Flotation Room, the Salt Room and the Color Therapy Room - a first for Gstaad. A fully-equipped fitness center and an 85-foot infinity lap pool can also be found in the spa. Other facilities of The Alpina Gstaad are: a lounge and bar, a wine-tasting room, a ballroom and several boardrooms. A large outdoor swimming pool will be set in the gardens. The luxury hotel's 56 spacious rooms and suites - all with balconies - range from 333 square feet for a standard room to 4,300 square feet for the two-level Panorama Suite.

“Preferred Hotels & Resorts is honored to welcome The Alpina Gstaad as it nears completion,” said Lindsey Ueberroth, President, Preferred Hotel Group. “This elite Switzerland property under the leadership of Onno Poortier, who is a true visionary in the world of hospitality, and Managing Director Niklaus Leuenberger will raise the bar on luxury and truly exemplify the Preferred Hotels & Resorts brand,” she continued.

The five-star property is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Swiss architecture incorporating authentic local materials and time-honored Alpine style. Massive blocks of Ringgenberg limestone from local quarries, have been hand carved for the entrance and ground floor. Hundred-year-old fir wood, gathered from old Alpine farm houses, decorates the façade and lines the walls of the public rooms. Huge windows allow for plenty of natural light and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

“We are delighted to join such an exceptional collection,” said Mr. Poortier. “With the Preferred Hotels & Resorts affiliation we will welcome those discerning travelers who appreciate a memorable holiday in an authentic setting,” he added.

“Highly intuitive and personalized guest experiences are the distinguishing features of their properties,” explained Managing Director Leuenberger. “We intend to offer a true Swiss Alpine experience with an unsurpassed level of service,” he said.
