Kimpton Names Matthew Hurlburt Area Director of Hotel Operations for New York & Pennsylvania and General Manager of Kimpton Muse Hotel

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Hurlburt as its new Area Director of Operations for New York and Pennsylvania and as General Manager of Kimpton Muse Hotel in Manhattan. In his new role, Matthew will oversee six Kimpton properties in both states: Kimpton Hotel Eventi, Kimpton Ink48 Hotel and Kimpton Muse Hotel in New York City; Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia and Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia and Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh.

As Area Director of Hotel Operations for New York and Pennsylvania, Matthew will work closely with the General Managers as well as with the leaders of various departments of each of the hotels to maximize potential. As General Manager of Kimpton Muse Hotel, where he will be based, Matthew will be responsible for all aspects of the hotel and its day-to-day operations, including the 181 guest rooms and 19 suites, and dining destination. Matthew will be overseeing a multimillion-dollar renovation throughout 2019 including an innovative fitness center, refreshed public spaces, a new bar concept and an expansive new suite featuring a private gym. “Matthew has been a member of the Kimpton family for over six years and has proven to be an invaluable leader,” said Ben Timashenka, Regional Vice President of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. “Coupled with his more than two decades of hospitality experience, we are confident that he will do a superb job overseeing six of our boutique hotels located in the key markets of New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.”

A nearly 25-year hospitality industry veteran, Matthew began his career in California, initially at Woolley's Petite Suites in Santa Ana and then the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. He moved to Dallas, working at Hyatt Regency DFW Airport, before making his way to New York, where he worked at the Grand Hyatt New York. Matthew then headed to Washington, D.C. and from 1998 to 2012 held successive management positions at the Hyatt Fair Lakes in Fairfax, VA; Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA; Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill; and Grand Hyatt Washington. In 2012, Matthew joined Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants as General Manager of the Hotel Monaco Alexandria, and in 2013 was named Kimpton's Area Director of Hotel Operations for the Mid-Atlantic Region, where he oversaw seven properties in Washington, D.C. totaling more than 1,100 keys and over 300 employees.

Kimpton Ink48 Hotel, located in Hell's Kitchen, has 222 rooms and is known for its popular restaurant PRINT. and rooftop The Press Lounge. Kimpton Hotel Eventi, located in Chelsea, features 345 rooms and two Laurent Tourondel-helmed restaurants, L'Amico and The Vine. Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia offers 268 rooms in the historic Lafayette Building along with the Red Owl Tavern serving seasonal American fare and Stratus Rooftop Lounge, while Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia features modern-meets-Art Deco decor in 230 rooms and Square 1682 restaurant. Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh has 248 rooms, the popular Commoner tavern, and a rooftop biergarten.

Revenue Management: Focus On Profit

Revenue Management is still a relatively new profession within hotel operations and as such, it continues to evolve. One significant trend in this area is a shift away from using revenue as the foundation to generate key performance indicators (KPIs) and to instead place the emphasis on profit. Traditionally, revenue managers have relied on total revenue per available room (TrevPAR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) as the basis of their KPIs. Now, some revenue managers are using gross operating profit per available room (GOPPAR) as their primary KPI. This puts profit at the center of revenue management strategy, and managers are increasingly searching for new ways to increase the profitability of their hotels. Return on Investment is the objective of any hotel investment, so it is only logical that profitability and ROI will be emphasized going forward. Another trend is an expanded focus on direct hotel bookings. Revenue managers know that one way to increase profitability is to steer guests away from online travel agencies (OTAs) and book directly with the hotel. This tactic also reinforces brand identity and loyalty, and encourages repeat business. In addition, it provides a valuable platform to market the hotel directly to the customer, and to upsell room upgrades or other services to them. Another trend for revenue managers involves automation in their software programs. Revenue management systems with automation are far more desirable than those without it. Automating data entry and logistics increases efficiency, allowing managers to spend more time on formulating strategy. As a bonus, an automated system helps with aggregating and interpreting data. The October issue of the Hotel Business Review will address these developments and document how some leading hotels are executing their revenue management strategies.
