InterContinental Adelaide Plans $32 million Refurbishment in Late 2021

United Kingdom, Denham. May 17, 2021

InterContinental Adelaide, one of Adelaide's landmark luxury hotels, announces its first major renovation since its opening.

The hotel's asset management company, TCC Land International, based in Thailand, together with hotel operator, IHG Hotels & Resorts, has outlined plans for an extensive $32 million investment into the iconic 367 room hotel, which will commence in late 2021.

The transformative refurbishment will include a redesign of all 367 guestrooms and suites; upgrades to meeting and event spaces; a refreshed restaurant and bar; enhancements to the hotel's award-winning Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, Shiki; and a new InterContinental Club Lounge space and experience. It will also mean a face lift for the hotel's entrance, lobby, hallways and lifts.

Guests will enjoy a new and exciting range of services and amenities including refined culinary experiences, impressive spaces to host gatherings, and expansive technology-enabled facilities for business and leisure guests alike.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall welcomed the news, saying the refurbishment would add a valuable option for South Australia's tourism, events and business sectors.

"It is a terrific vote of confidence in South Australia - and in our tourism and business credentials. We've already seen record occupancy in regional SA, and the highest occupancy in the CBD since the pandemic began, so today's announcement adds further weight to the importance of continuing to evolve and innovate," he said.

"I want to acknowledge IHG for their investment in Adelaide. It is extremely positive that they see both economic and strategic value in committing to our state moving forward."

Michael Gaedtke, General Manager of InterContinental Adelaide, commented:

"InterContinental Adelaide has been one of the city's most loved and iconic luxury hotels for many years, hosting travellers from around the world. We know that South Aussies have a great pride in our iconic, vibrant hotel with its riverbank location and views directly over the Torrens and Adelaide Oval, and we recognise the responsibility that comes with that. This renovation affirms our commitment to South Australian tourism, and demonstrates support for the Government's focus on growing the State's share of high-yielding domestic and international visitors".

Leanne Harwood, Managing Director for Australasia and Japan, added:

"InterContinental Adelaide is consistently ranked as one of IHG's top hotels from a guest satisfaction perspective, and we know that travellers will be excited to see the new product once it's complete. We are so pleased that TCC Land International is investing in the future of this great property, the hotel industry, and South Australian tourism. We have no doubt that InterContinental Adelaide will continue to define itself as one of Adelaide's most iconic luxury hotels".

Now that the project has been announced, the next phase will be to appoint a project manager, and an interior designer.

InterContinental Adelaide continues to host some of the world's biggest names when they visit Adelaide, and has a strong loyalty following through its IHG Rewards and InterContinental Ambassador programmes. Notable past guests have included The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, the Australian and Indian Cricket Teams, and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The hotel has also welcomed some of the largest events in Adelaide, including the launch of the Qatar flight to Adelaide and the 32nd Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

The hotel will remain open throughout the renovation, which is expected to be completed in early 2023, with the project generating jobs and economic benefit to Adelaide during construction. With preliminary planning underway for the refurbishment, the renovation is well-timed as the hospitality sector recovers from its most challenging year on record due the impact of COVID-19.

IHG currently has 60 hotels operating under six brands in Australasia, including a big presence in South Australia with Crowne Plaza Adelaide, Holiday Inn Express Adelaide, and the brand new Hotel Indigo Adelaide, which opened on 1 March. InterContinental Sydney recently announced details of its upcoming refurbishment, which will also commence in 2021.
