Yotel Washington DC Welcomes Matt Sommers as General Manager

USA, Washington, D.C. April 29, 2022

YOTEL has appointed Matt Sommers as General Manager of YOTEL Washington DC on Capitol Hill. With more than a decade of experience at luxury and top-rated hotels across the US, Sommers will oversee operations of the 377-room hotel including its award-winning Art and Soul restaurant and Deck 11 rooftop lounge.

"Having first heard of YOTEL over a decade ago, I was instantly intrigued by the brand's use of technology and modern, contemporary design to create a hospitality experience unlike any other at the time," Sommers said. "As the brand's first-ever transition of an existing hotel, YOTEL Washington DC has already set new industry standards since opening just over a year ago, benefiting from a complete reconstruction of the previous Liaison Washington Capitol Hill. From the hotel crew to the talented restaurant staff, I'm excited to be part of the awesome team and look forward to accomplishing future milestones together."

Prior to joining YOTEL Washington DC, Sommers served as general manager of Capitol Hill Hotel, where he developed new brand positioning and launched a new guest service training program. He has also overseen hotel operations for MGM Resorts International in National Harbor, MD and Las Vegas and served in a variety of roles for luxury brands and properties such as Salamander Resort & Spa, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and Monte Carlo Resort and Casino (now Park MGM) in Las Vegas.

A graduate of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Hotel Management as well as Cornell University with a Master's in Hotel Administration, Sommers was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, later moving to Las Vegas after college where he started his career in hospitality as a concierge at the Paris Hotel & Casino. Although he moved with his wife of 15 years to Washington DC in 2016, he is still a self-proclaimed die-hard fan of the Calgary Flames. Sommers is also a movie buff and avid reader of the Harry Potter series. Fred and George Weasley are his favorite characters.

As the brand's fifth hotel in the US, YOTEL Washington DC boasts a location closer than any other hotel to Capitol Hill. Steps away from the city's most renowned attractions, the property offers an indoor-outdoor restaurant in Art and Soul along with one of the District's largest rooftop lounges, Deck 11, with a full-service bar, expansive pool, and dynamic programming. YOTEL has 20 hotels in operation worldwide, from San Francisco to New York, Amsterdam to Istanbul, and all the way to Singapore. YOTEL will welcome YOTEL Miami and YOTELPAD Miami in spring 2022, the brand's first-ever dual-branded location with both a hotel and condominiums.

Sales & Marketing: Promoting Peace of Mind

As the hotel industry transitions to a more familiar position, it is still necessary for hotels to emphasize in their marketing the health protocols they have implemented to ensure guest safety and wellness. Above all, guests need to be reassured that every precaution is being taken to safeguard their well-being. Additionally, there are other marketing strategies that hotels can implement as a way to boost their business. For example, neighborhood marketing is a tactic that relies heavily on appealing to local audiences. Incentives targeting locals can fulfill the craving that some people have for time away from home, but aren't ready to hop on a plane. Another viable strategy is to promote experiences in nature. After being stuck inside for so long, many people are looking for hotels to help them re-connect with the great outdoors. The June Hotel Business Review will focus on the marketing strategies that some hotels are adopting and how they are benefiting from them.
