Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Welcomes New Executive Chef Timothy Wedell

USA, Chicago, Illinois. May 19, 2023

Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk is proud to announce the appointment of Chef Timothy Wedell as its new executive chef. Chef Wedell will oversee the culinary team responsible for food production at banquets, room service, and the hotel's four dining outlets: Shula's Steak House, Riverside Cafe, Link Cafe and Chicago Burger Company.

Chef Wedell brings a seasoned background to Sheraton and is excited to rejoin the Marriott family. Earlier in his career, he worked with DPG Club Development as the Executive Chef to help transform private islands and escapes into luxury resorts. He then gained experience as the Executive Chef at Starwood and Marriott properties in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chicagoland for a total of eight years before heading West to take a position as the Executive Chef of Omni Hotels & Resorts. Throughout, Chef Wedell also enjoyed seasons as the Chef de Cuisine at Augusta National Golf Course, home of The Masters Golf Tournament, where he worked in the main clubhouse for seven years up to 2022.

"We're thrilled to welcome Chef Wedell to Sheraton," said Lisa Timbo, Area General Manager. "He joins us with much enthusiasm and a vision of service to ensure that our guests experience a well-rounded stay."

His approach to leading is rooted in patience and a love for service. Chef Wedell is inspired by his grandmother who worked as a housekeeper at a resort and always cooked dinner upon her return home, crediting the spark for his culinary journey to her.

"At my core, I want to give back to this profession what I've been given," said Chef Wedell. "I believe that people want to be included, understood and given the ability to grow. When you share knowledge and collaborate with your team, the whole is so much greater than the sum of all parts."

As Chef Wedell steps into his new role, he is looking forward to revamping menus at Sheraton's dining outlets and banquets for spring and summer, as well as interacting with guests during upcoming cooking classes hosted at the hotel.

Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk is located in the beating heart of Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood - an urban gem in a storied travel destination. The hotel is home to Shula's Steak House, known for its exclusive, high-quality meat and fresh seafood, Chicago Burger Company, a seasonal spot with juicy burgers and vegetarian options, thick shakes, innovative cocktails and great views of the Riverwalk and Navy Pier fireworks, and Riverside Cafe which offers breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch. Sheraton grand also boasts Link Cafe, a perfect place to grab a coffee, pastries, healthy snacks, soups or sandwiches, as well as a vibrant cocktail bar coined CHI Bar.

Hotel Spa: Reconnecting With Nature

Hotel spas have never been so popular. The global wellness market is estimated to be in excess of $1.5 trillion with an annual growth rate of 5 to 10 percent. Consequently, spas are continually developing new programs, products, tools, and environments to meet the needs of guests who are seeking total body health and wellness. One trend that spas are embracing is a multiplicity of ways to reconnect with nature. Spas are moving beyond the “garden” model and going deeper into the countryside and forest, providing immersion in a wilder natural setting. Wild swimming, forest bathing, foraging, outdoor massage, and hiking trails are concepts that are being designed into the spa journey. Some hotels have built individual cabins deep in the forest for sauna, bathing and massage treatments, and others are offering bedroom suites which are located in cabins or tree houses away from the main hotel. The July issue of the Hotel Business Review will report on these and other developments, and how some hotel spas are integrating them into their operations.
