. October 14, 2008

SEPTEMBER 27, 2007. Representatives of the U.S. travel industry will join colleagues and communities worldwide in marking World Tourism Day on Thursday, September 27, an annual event sanctioned by the U.N. World Tourism Organization.

To mark the celebration in Washington, leaders from 25 states and dozens of U.S. cities who are visiting the capital for the Travel Leadership Summit (a legislative summit hosted by the Travel Business Roundtable and the Travel Industry Association) will pause to acknowledge the power of travel and its unique position to transform how people see the United States.

"Travel is vital to the U.S. in so many respects, from shaping how the world views us to building local economies and creating countless social benefits," said Roger J. Dow, President and CEO of the Travel Industry Association. "It is fitting that we take a day each year to unite with our industry partners around the world in recognition of the tremendous opportunities that this industry affords."

In the United States travel is one of the largest employers, directly generating earnings of $171 billion that supports 7.5 million jobs across every local economy. Domestic and international travel expenditures total $700 billion, making it one of America's largest industries.

TIA is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the $700 billion travel industry. TIA's mission is to represent the whole of the U.S. travel industry to promote and facilitate increased travel to and within the United States.
