Something Fishy Happening in Pennsylvania

. April 17, 2009

BRADFORD, PA, April 17, 2009 - There's something fishy happening in McKean County starting in April and many anglers couldn't be happier.

That's when the 2009 fishing season opens in Pennsylvania. And while fishing season opens throughout the state, there are many streams and opportunities in the Pennsylvania Wilds, McKean County that will please any fisherman from the novice to the expert.

Willow Bay, along the Allegheny Reservoir in the Allegheny National Forest, will be open and ready for any fisherman who wants to try his or her luck in their waters. Marilla Reservoir, just east of Bradford along Route 346, is a local preference and has just reopened after spillway repairs in 2008. The Marilla Bridges Trail circles the reservoir and provides easy access for fisherman.

There are several other areas deemed Approved Trout Waters, which have sizable portions that are open to public fishing and are stocked with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

There are four Class A Wild Trout Streams in McKean County. They are Parker Run near Gardeau; East Branch of the Tunungwant Creek near Cyclone; Allegheny Portage Creek near Liberty and Waldy Run, near the border with Cameron County. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission says that Class A Wild Trout Streams support wild trout of sufficient size and abundance to support a long-term sport fishery. The Commission does not stock these streams.

Local favorite places for anglers are Westline Creek, Potato Creek and the headwaters of the Allegheny River in Port Allegany where many fishermen try their luck to come away with a grand fish story. The Westline Inn, at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest, offers a "bed & a meal" in a convenient location for fisherman angling along Westline Creek.

On the Allegheny National Forest, several recreation areas open in April. Those include Beaver Meadows, Hearts Content, Minister Creek and Tracey Ridge, which are primitive campgrounds with vault restrooms.

Improved campgrounds, which include electric hookups, such as Loleta, Red Bridge and Twin Lakes, will be open as well as boat-to campgrounds on the Allegheny Reservoir, including Handsome Lake, Hooks Brook, Hopewell, Morrison and Pine Grove. Rustic cabins are available at Willow Bay within the Allegheny National Forest. Reservations can be made by calling 877-444-6777 or on-line at www.recreation.gov.

Boat launches on the reservoir, including Elijah Run, Kiasutha, Roper Hollow, Webbs Ferry and Willow Bay, will also be open.

For those who want more luxurious accommodations and experienced guide services, Glendorn, an ORVIS endorsed fly-fishing lodge offers something for them.

The resort has an ORVIS Day Tripper Float Trip on Bondieu Lake that helps position the angler in the best locations to "hook, catch and release trout", and Clakacraft Drift Boat Trips on the Allegheny and Clarion Rivers take the angler and a guide to remote sites along these National Scenic Rivers.

Glendorn is also the home of Fuller Brook - nearly three miles of privately managed trout angling ranging from native brook trout to a mix of brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout.

Fishing at Glendorn is all catch and release.

The Kinzua Fly Fishing School will help those who need a little assistance when it comes to fly fishing at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. They offer classes for both the experienced and beginner.

A three-day session will be held from May 1-3 and a two-day session will be May 16-17. Contract [email protected] for more information.
