Capt. Nair Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
AUGUST 14, 2009 - The chairman of one of India's most renowned hotel groups was honored last week for his contribution to the travel and tourism industry. Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, Chairman of The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts was conferred the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by CNBC TRAVEL AWARDS 2009.
Smt. Kumari Selja, Minister for Tourism and State Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation referred to Capt. Nair as the doyen of the industry while presenting the award on July 30. More than 1,000 diplomats, government officials and CEOs from the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors attended the glittering ceremony held in the Grand Ballroom of The Leela Palace Kempinski Bangalore.
"India is fast emerging as a major travel and tourism player and Incredible India is the driving force. CNBC is giving due importance to the role that tourism plays in the economy. The Indian hospitality industry is experiencing a boom with most international brands seeking entry opportunities in this market. The industry can rapidly provide the additional hotel rooms to meet the demands of 10 million foreign tourists. The grant of infrastructure status to hotels, as is given to airports by the government will give the fillip to such investment in the sector which provides employment to 40 million persons and earns $100 billion in foreign exchange," said Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair. On a more personal note, Capt. Nair said that he was both honored and delighted to win this prestigious recognition.
