New York City Becomes Classroom for Students in The School of Hospitality Business

. December 09, 2009

EAST LANSING, December 8, 2009 - Nearly 60 students from The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University traveled to New York City November 6 - 10, 2009 for the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show (IH/M&RS).

While in New York, the students had unique, hands-on opportunities to learn about the industry. They were responsible for The School's exhibit booth at the Show, located at the Jacob Javits Center, staffing shifts for each of the Show's three days. In addition, they attended The School's annual Celebration of Leadership at The Waldorf=Astoria on Saturday evening, which honored The School's Alumni Association Industry Leader of the Year and the five new inductees in its Wall of Fame, the Class of Exemplars.

Also on Saturday, 50 of the students networked with young School alumni at a gathering designed for them, also at The Waldorf=Astoria.

But much of their time in New York was spent in professional development experiences arranged for them by The School's Student and Industry Resource Center (SIRC). They enjoyed a program and tour of The Waldorf=Astoria Hotel with Hotel Manager Mark Lauer and School Alumni who are associates at the hotel. The School has had an especially close relationship with The Waldorf=Astoria over the years, with many graduates working there, and executives from The Waldorf often coming to campus to speak in classes and recruit students.

Other professional development programs included a tour of Red Lobster at Times Square; a Starwood Hotels Corporation briefing and a tour of the Sheraton New York; a tour of Darden Restaurant's The Capital Grille; and a program and tour at the Harvard Club of New York City.

The students who travel to New York are chosen based on their leadership and volunteer activities within The School, as well as their academic records. Sponsorship funds were generously donated this year to complement endowed funds which provide for their expenses. They deeply appreciate the opportunity to learn in New York, and have repeatedly said that they enjoy most of all networking with School Alumni and the gracious hospitality of The Waldorf=Astoria.
