Red Roof Gets Positive Feedback on Exterior Corridors

. April 14, 2010

April 12, 2010 - Who knew? In a survey that specifically asked how they felt about the exterior corridors of its hotels, Red Roof® guest responses were largely positive and cited very practical reasons in choosing Red Roof because of the outside corridors at its properties. Bikers driving up in their cherished Harleys, for instance, said they liked being able to keep an eye on their bikes parked right outside their door; in some instances, obsessive bike owners “sleep” with their bikes, wheeling them right into their rooms for the utmost safe-keeping.

Seniors also loved Red Roof's exterior corridors, noting the convenience and comfort in knowing they could quickly access their rooms on a first floor or a second floor level. The survey reported a third of Red Roof guests travel with their pets, more than double the national average. It's no wonder dog lovers, especially, were enthusiastic about the ability to walk their pets using the expedience of the exterior corridors. The traveling business person (who often has to move materials in and out of their car), sports fans, even traveling athletes, said Red Roof's exterior corridors were a major asset of the brand.

“We've found that the competitive landscape is moving away from exterior corridors or even forcing new construction to eliminate them, but in fact, this survey has shown that guests seek out our properties specifically for that reason. I think Red Roof really has the opportunity here to reinvent exterior corridors as a guest benefit and a point of differentiation for the brand. Our goal is to market our exterior corridors in fresh and creative ways,” says Marina MacDonald, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Red Roof.

The Red Roof survey also found that hotel guests enjoyed exterior corridors for a number of other revealing reasons:

  • They were advantageous in bad weather
  • Provided a meeting place for groups or events
  • Were a natural common space

As a result of this data, Red Roof is making a concentrated effort to enhance its exterior corridors. In fact, this Spring, Red Roof will schedule a full day to spruce up its exterior corridors with painting, landscaping (adding flowers, foliage, etc) and lighting to be added to corridors at most locations. After the “spruce up” there will be an internal property by property competition, called the Golden Shovel awards, to determine the best looking exterior. The voting will be conducted by Red Roof's Executive Committee, Franchise Advisory Council, select RediCard® members and up and coming Country Music artists and Red Roof musical ambassadors, KingBilly; selected because they have performed between 60-70 Red Roof lobby concerts throughout the U.S.
