Say Hello to Vancouver's Newest Hotel GMs
July 19, 2011 - It's been a busy year in hotel management, with general managers at several major Vancouver hotels passing the torch after long and valued years of service. Below, find a lengthy (though not exhaustive) list of recently appointed hotel GMs.
- Fairmont Pacific Rim. In mid-July, Philip M. Barnes took on the role of vice president and general manager of Fairmont Pacific Rim. Barnes brings more than 35 years of hospitality experience to the role, most recently as regional vice president of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts United Arab Emirates and general manager of Fairmont Dubai.
- Rosewood Hotel Georgia. With four decades of experience in managing luxury hotel properties, Steve Halliday joined Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in July as managing director of the recently reopened Vancouver property. Prior to that, Halliday served as founder and president of Halliday Hospitality Group and vice president and general manager of Pan Pacific Vancouver.
- Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver. In June, Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. appointed Richard Cooke as general manager of both Shangri-La, Vancouver and the soon-to-be-opened Shangri-La, Toronto. Cooke's experience in the hospitality industry spans four continents, and includes such properties as Traders Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai.
- Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Ulrich Samietz assumed the role of general manager in June after working for several years at Hyatt Regency properties across North America. In 2008, he was named the hotel chain's general manager of the year.
- The Burrard. On June 1, The Burrard (formerly The Burrard Inn) reopened with a new name and new general manager. Dani Pretto initially held the role of project leader for the hotel's renovation, and has since transitioned to the role of general manager.
- Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. Robert Cima is no stranger to Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. For more than 28 years, he has led teams at 13 of the hotel group's most acclaimed properties. In January, he joined Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver as regional vice president and general manager.
- Coast Coal Harbour Hotel. Appointed as general manager in September 2010, Craig Norris-Jones is also vice president of operations for Coast Hotels & Resorts, which serves more than 40 communities across Canada and the U.S.
- Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier. Tim Morrison was appointed general manager in September 2010, after spending four years as managing director of the Olympic Villages in Vancouver and Whistler, and more than seven years at Pan Pacific Hotel.
