Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas Receives Golf Digest Editors' Choice Award

Spectacular Resort and Greg Norman-Designed Course Win for a Second Time

Mexico, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. March 31, 2021

Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas and its epic Greg Norman Signature Course have received a 2021 Golf Digest Editors' Choice Award in the ‘Best Golf Resorts in Mexico & Central America' category. This is the second consecutive year the resort and golf club have been singled out for recognition by the sport's most widely-read and respected publication.

"This is Year 6 of our annual Editors' Choice Awards package, offering once again an assortment of products that can help golfers play better, smarter and healthier in 2021," said Ryan Herrington, the magazine's deputy digital editor. "Additionally, we also recognize top destinations and travel-related services in hopes that golf trips will be something we can all enjoy again in the not-too-distant future."

Select award winners will appear in print in Issue #3 of Golf Digest magazine, and all award winners are featured on

An exclusive 834-acre resort community, Rancho San Lucas is set in rolling desert foothills that slope to 1.2 miles of pristine beachfront on the Pacific Ocean. Located 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, a vibrant deep-sea fishing and nightlife capital, this exclusive gated enclave offers a level of serenity rarely found in Cabo.

Oriented to the sea, Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas evokes a coastal Baja motif that is both sophisticated and welcoming. Mirroring the area's desert landscape, the resort's design melds natural earth tones with traditional touches such as barrel tile roofs, archways and ironwork. Lush greenery and numerous water features, including a lazy river and salt water lagoon, accentuate outdoor areas. The all-suite hotel offers a range of deluxe amenities, from in-villa dining and spa services to full kitchens with marble counters. Contemporary interiors offer bountiful natural light and feature brightly colored décor inspired by the Mexican culture.

The hotel is walking distance from the new Rancho San Lucas Golf Club and its Greg Norman Signature Course that opened in February 2020. Inspired by the native terrain and featuring splendid ocean views from every hole, the versatile 7,210-yard, par-72 course is laid out within earshot of the thundering surf. Spanning three different ecosystems, the course rambles through huge windswept dunes at the start, climbs through a thick cactus forest creased by arroyos, and returns players to the beach and sea on the back nine.

Featuring a dramatic 300-foot elevation change, the versatile, well-strategized design, marked by broad fairways and generous targets, has five holes on the beach, notably the par-3 third, which parallels the sea and gives players fine views of breaching whales during the winter months.

Known for his ‘least-disturbance' design approach, Norman built a links-style layout that required minimal earthmoving. To create a sustainable golf course that flows naturally with the dune and desert landscape, Norman integrated indigenous vegetation and grass varietals that use the least amount of water. Rancho San Lucas is grassed from tee-to-green in Paspalum, a drought-tolerant, disease-resistant varietal that uses a fraction of the insecticides and fertilizer required by normal grasses. The club has applied for enrollment in Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.

The layout's defining characteristic is its revetted pot bunkers. These sharp-edged, steep-walled sandy pits were constructed from recycled artificial turf and are nearly identical to the natural sod-walled bunkers found on British links course. Resistant to washouts, the club's synthetic bunkers are a first in Mexico.

With two on-course comfort stations, each providing Mexican specialties and ice-cold refreshments, players can enjoy an all-inclusive experience during the round. A handsome ranchero-style clubhouse overlooks the fairways and sea. The practice facility features a spacious driving range, an 18-hole putting course, and dedicated chipping, pitching and sand play areas.

Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to guests of Solmar Group hotels, including the on-site Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas Resort. Real estate is available ranging from $425,000 to $7 million. Visit for more info.

Eco-Friendly Practices: Now More Than Ever

One theory about the pandemic states that future viruses are more likely to originate and flourish due to global warming. If true, the urgency to accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly practices is greater than ever. Of course, there are many other reasons to create a sustainable operation, including reduced utility costs, savings on operational costs, healthier and happier guests and employees, and positive publicity, marketing and community goodwill. Many hotels are introducing innovative programs into their operations - from recycling bins in guest rooms to starting a roof top garden. Other hotels are using eco-friendly cleaning products, reusing towels and sheets, sourcing locally grown food, supporting the use of electric vehicles, and permitting guests to refill their reusable water bottles with clean, filtered water. Finally, some hotels are encouraging guests to get involved by making it possible for them to participate in local community clean-up projects. The May issue of the Hotel Business Review will document what some hotels are doing to integrate sustainable practices into their operations and how they are benefiting from them.
