The Cutest Gift in the World
Adopt a Koala for Christmas
This Christmas buy your loved one the cutest, most unique gift in the world and adopt a koala from The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie. For just AU$40 per year the package includes a certificate of adoption with a photo, the name of the koala and a short story about its life. Overseas adoptions cost AU$50, a true Aussie gift for international family and friends.
At a time of waste and ill-considered gifts, by adopting a koala for Christmas your gift is to help save these national icons from facing extinction. Koalas are a threatened species whose habitat is continually decimated by urbanisation, resulting in an increase in disease expression, attacks by dogs and being hit by motor vehicles.
The Koala Hospital is located in Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW and the only wildlife hospital in the world that is solely dedicated to the care of koalas. Its role is to treat and rehabilitate sick, injured and orphaned wild koalas with the aim of returning them to the wild.
The Hospital is affiliated and works alongside the University of Sydney and various other universities, researching diseases and problems that beset the koala, and is therefore a dedicated research centre.
The adopt a koala program is the most important revenue source to fund the treatment room, eight intensive care units, a 24 hour rescue and treatment operation and 33 recovery yards.
Tourists from all over the world visit Port Macquarie's Koala Hospital, which attracts more than 20,000 visitors a year. The top five international countries that subscribe to the adopt a koala program are Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, England and the United States.
On your travels in NSW this summer, don't miss a stop in to this unique attraction. The Koala Hospital is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 8am to 4.30pm. Entry and viewings are at no cost and there is a daily 'Feed, Walk and Talk' tour at 3pm.
You can view the profiles of koalas for adoption online and the package also comes with a vinyl sticker 'I have adopted a wild koala', a pamphlet about the Hospital, a booklet about koalas and the newsletter, Gum Tips.
