Birdland @ 60” a Jazz Photo Exhibit Celebratimg Birdland's 60th Aniversary

AFFINIA MANHATTAN HOTEL TO EXHIBIT PHOTOS OF MUSICAL GREATS WHO HAVE APPEARED AT BIRDLAND

. November 11, 2009

In conjunction with its 60th anniversary, December 15, 2009, Birdland Jazz Club in partnership with Affinia Hotels will present an exhibition of new and never-before-seen color and black-and-white fine art photographs taken of some of the century's greatest jazz musicians, all captured in performance on the legendary Birdland stage. The photos will be exhibited from December 3rd- 31st, 2009 in The Madison Room of the Affinia Manhattan Hotel (371 Seventh Avenue @ 31st Street). An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd, from 6-8 p.m.

The exhibition will include photos by Richard Conde, Enid Farber, Alan Nahigian, and Ryan Paternite of such artists as: Tony Bennett, George Benson, Michael Brecker, Ron Carter, Christine Ebersole, Kurt Elling, Roy Haynes, Hank Jones, Michel Legrand, Joe Lovano, Chita Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Phoebe Snow, and many more.

Ryan Paternite, Director of Programming at Birdland and exhibit curator notes: “There are precious few photographs from the mid-20th century when New York City jazz clubs rose to prominence. As an antidote to this dearth of visual history we, the modern incarnation of Birdland, have taken pride in documenting the artists who make the club and the jazz art form special and significant. Exhibiting these photographs seemed a fitting and unique way to celebrate our 60th anniversary, by honoring the legendary jazz artists who grace our stage every night as seen from the audience's perspective.”

The Affinia Manhattan, one of Birdland's promotional partners throughout their 60th anniversary year, provides an ideal stage for this exhibition. “We're honored to host this visual history of such an iconic venue as Birdland and continue our own longstanding tradition of embracing local culture,” said Steven Kipnis, General Manager of the Affinia Manhattan.

The “Birdland @ 60” photo exhibit is free and open to the public for viewing on the following dates: December 3rd: Opening Reception, 6-8 p.m.; December 4-6: 11 a.m.- 9 p.m.; December 7-9: 5 p.m.-9 p.m.; December 10-16: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; December 17: 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; December 18: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; December 19: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; December 21: 3 p.m.-9 p.m.; December 22-31: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

About Birdland Jazz Club

Named for alto saxophonist and jazz pioneer Charlie “Bird” Parker, who dubbed it “The Jazz Corner of the World,” Birdland opened on December 15th, 1949. For 60 years it has been home to jazz legends, from Parker, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie to Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Diana Krall, and everyone in between. The original 52nd Street location was a cultural barometer and meeting place, inspiring the songs “Birdland” and “Lullabye of Birdland” and serving as a regular haunt for celebrities and cultural figures. The modern incarnation is a state-of-the-art nightclub featuring award-winning southern and Cajun cuisine, first-rate sound and lighting, and a who's who of contemporary musical artists, seven nights a week.
