. May 03, 2010

April 30, 2010 - Evergreen Lodge, a historic mountain resort located on the western border of Yosemite National Park, announces the opening of its newest accommodation, the John Muir House, a private three-bedroom mountain retreat.

This 2,500-square-foot contemporary cedar house is set apart from the rest of the lodge and surrounded by majestic Sierra forest. It boasts a master bedroom with a king-size bed, two additional bedrooms with queen beds and a spacious loft with two full-size futons. The open-concept living room is done in a casual decor with comfortable seating areas and a plasma television with DVD player. But the true big picture is seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The gourmet kitchen has stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. There are three bathrooms with ecossential bath products, hair dryers and premium towels. The porch is screened and the 1,000-square-foot private deck has a large hot tub and gas barbeque. For those who must be connected, there is complimentary wireless Internet.

The John Muir House offers the privacy of a vacation rental with convenient access to all of Evergreen's amenities. The standard off-peak rate is $550-795 per night, and the standard peak and holiday rate is $750-995 per night.

Also new this year is an expanded wellness program. Adding to the Evergreen Lodge's spa services is daily yoga instruction for guests, with morning classes held outdoors in a nearby meadow.

A guided Sunrise Hike and Yoga Journey has also been introduced. Guests are immersed in the beauty of Yosemite in this four and a half-hour hiking and yoga adventure. The morning begins with a two and a half-mile hike to Lookout Point for views of Wapama Falls and Tuolumne Canyon. Guests then participate in a gentle vinyasa flow yoga session in the morning mountain air. Following the professionally led yoga practice, a light snack is offered before beginning the hike back to the lodge. The Sunrise Hike and Yoga Journey is offered May through to October for $65 per person. Private trips are available.

Last spring, Evergreen Lodge completed the expansion of 24 new family and couples cabins. The lodge now has 90 cabins, as well as the John Muir House. The cabins are warmly furnished with comfy beds and feather pillows, heating, private bathrooms, spacious decks, SIRIUS satellite radio, Keurig coffee makers and more.

The lodge is an attractive base from which to discover the wonders of Yosemite. Guests can explore on their own or join the Evergreen's guide service and outdoor recreation program, the most comprehensive in the area. The resort's guided activities offer guests the rare opportunity to experience both Yosemite's most famous attractions and its hidden gems. Many of the hikes and bikes are seasonal. This spring, some of the more popular treks include:

Hetch Hetchy Wapama Falls Naturalist Hike explores Yosemite's hidden gem, Wapama Falls. Offered through May.

Rainbow Pools Bike, Hike & Swim takes bike riders along Yosemite back roads then on a gentle hike along the pristine Tuolumne River to the historic Rainbow Pools for a dip. Offered through September.

Private Photography Workshop and Tour is led by professional Yosemite photographer and naturalist Robb Hirsch in half- or full-day sessions for up to three people at a time.
