Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown Appoints Eric Smith as Spa Director

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, the award-winning destination hotel in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighbourhood, has appointed Eric Smith to the position of Spa Director. A nearly two-decade veteran of the luxury spa industry, Smith brings a refreshed and globalised vision to the role, set to further solidify the award-winning reputation of The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, a Forbes Five Star Spa.

As Spa Director, Eric Smith is responsible for oversight of day-to-day operations of The Spa, which consists of seven treatment rooms, a nail room, indoor relaxation room, the boutique, a 75-foot (23 metre) indoor heated lap pool, outdoor terrace, and 24-hour fitness centre. Smith will manage and develop The Spa by expanding existing treatments and services, enhancing the Resident Healers Program, and refreshing the various products and partners in the Boutique by blending his unique vision with the exceptional Four Seasons standard.

A Washington, DC native, Smith began his hospitality career at The Mandarin Oriental, where as a cultural exchange ambassador, he assisted in the pre- and post-opening of six locations globally including Shanghai, China and Taipei, Taiwan. Most recently serving as spa director for Equinox Hotels, Smith has also held executive positions at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, The Rittenhouse Hotel, and Trump International Hotel, providing him a rounded background and understanding of the elevated spa experience both operationally and from the guest perspective.

Hotel Law: The Consequences of Covid-19


As might be expected, the Hotel Law profession is contending with all types of legal issues stemming from the effects of Covid-19. Nearly all hotel employers are being impacted, dealing with issues such as leaves of absence, workers' classification, discrimination disputes, arbitration agreements, and union relations. In addition, some hotels are being obligated to comply with new Covid-19 health and safety laws, pertaining to workplaces that pose a risk of "imminent hazard."  There are also legal issues surrounding workplace Covid testing, and quarantining and isolation requirements. Worker compensation issues are also a concern when employees may have contracted Covid at work. New laws are classifying these illnesses as "occupational injuries" and therefore eligible for benefits. Other non-Covid legal issues that are coming to the forefront  involve an uptick of lawsuits pertaining to the American Disabilities Act and, in some states, there has been an expansion of the Family Leave Act. These are just a few of the subjects that the December issue of the Hotel Business Review will address in the area of Hotel Law.
