USA, Marina, California. February 02, 2023

The Sanctuary Beach Resort, a treasured Independent Collection ® Hotels & Resorts property, announced the appointment of its new executive chef, Jonathan Rodriguez. A seasoned professional, Rodriguez brings more than a decade of experience to his role, where he is tasked with ushering in the next era of culinary excellence at the serene Central California resort.

"Dining at The Sanctuary Beach Resort is an integral part of the property experience for both locals and guests and welcoming a culinary leader with the passion and capabilities that Chef Rodriguez has allowed us to take our offerings to the next level," said Sylvain Briens, resort general manager. "He has demonstrated a deep understanding of the coastal cuisine that is so signature to the destination and we look forward to what's to come as he continues to build upon and elevate our food and beverage program."

A native of New York, Rodriguez attended culinary school at Johnson & Wales University, building upon his passion for cooking and mastering his craft. He has spent much of his career in Northern California, holding roles in various prolific Michelin-starred restaurants including San Francisco outposts Quince, Lazy Bear and Atelier Crenn where he trained under a collection of the world's most accomplished culinary leaders. Most recently, Rodriguez served as chef de cuisine at Sierra Mar, the signature fine dining experience at Big Sur, Calif.'s Post Ranch Inn, where he supported a high-energy, high-volume kitchen and assisted with menu ideation and execution.

At The Sanctuary Beach Resort, Rodriguez is responsible for development of the menus and dining experiences at Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette in addition to reimagining in-room dining and catering offerings for meetings, groups and events.

Outside of the kitchen, Rodriguez's favorite moments are spent surf fishing near Carmel Beach or fishing in Monterey Bay alongside friends and family. He is also enthusiastic about supporting local farmers and winemakers and can regularly be found attending and participating in events including the Big Sur Food & Wine Festival, Outstanding in the Field, the Monterey Beer Festival and the Salinas Valley Food & Wine Festival. Guest Service: Exceeding Expectations

When guests check into a hotel, they have expectations of quality customer service. They expect to have their needs met in a professional manner, they desire a certain level of comfort, and possibly even made to feel a little special. This is important because satisfied guests are more likely to return and to become true brand ambassadors. But what if instead of merely meeting expectations, hotels created a culture of service that was intent on exceeding expectations in every conceivable way? What if frontline staff were trained and empowered to provide guest services that demonstrate a willingness to always go the extra mile in order to please their guests? This culture is exactly what some hotels are creating in their operations. From helpful, smiling, welcoming staff to the quality of  a room's comfort and conveniences. From discovering a guest's special needs and enthusiastically fulfilling them, to making some amenities free of charge and offering random upgrades. The April issue of the Hotel Business Review will explore what some hotels are doing to enhance and enrich their guest services.
